For anyone that has experienced anxiety and I guess we all have at some stage; but for those of us who have a history with it, when you feel its cold, hardening grasp take hold again, it can take your breath away. The all too familiar quickening of the breath, the panic that sets in around your heart can often bring us to our knees.

The body feels it all, it produces all the emotions, all the chemicals and hormones and in a very strange way it feels comfortable and familiar or as I call it….”the uncomfortable comfortableness”. When our body has felt anxiety so many times over a lifetime, it has a hardwired setting to move back in to it easily. The neural pathways are there, so are the chemical pathways and so are the thoughts go along with them.

It can be so easy to look externally to ‘find’ the reason for anxiety coming back again. And for most it is a learned protection mechanism from childhood. We did not have the analytical abilities back then to process emotions, to detach ourselves from external life.

But as adults we do have those mechanisms, we do have the power to go within and take ownership for our anxiety. Does it suck?? Yes, it does. It can be so much easier to find someone or something to blame for how we are feeling. And yes, there are circumstances in life that can happen that are just awful and that we don’t have control over….but we do have control over ourselves.

And it is a learned process. It takes time, it takes courage, it takes tears and it takes love. And I believe that is one of the biggest ones, being able to look ourselves in the mirror and say: “I love you” over and over again no matter how sh*t you’re feeling. No matter how much you are beating yourself up.

That is a funny one actually, we look outside of ourselves for the reason of the anxiety and then spend the rest of the time blaming self for it. It is a real vicious cycle and it gets us no where.

So many of us can keep anxiety well hidden from our outside world. We can often seem really chilled out to other people, when in fact there is a storm raging under the surface. I know from experience, from falling down many, many times that it is possible to unravel anxiety….to find actual gifts within it. There can be so many layers to it, that at a certain stage there is no option but find compassion and love.

Our anxiety can be a place of growth, a place of nourishment…..if we allow to be!
